Our topic this term is
'Global Explorers'
What are we learning about?
As Global Explorers, the children will explore Africa through our school link and compare it with Wales and their local community, learning about similarities and differences in homes, food, animals, and weather. They will look at how people live in different environments and how climate affects daily life, while developing key map skills such as locating Africa and Wales on a map or globe, using simple symbols and keys, and using geographical language to describe places. This topic encourages curiosity, cultural awareness, and an understanding of the wider world.
In Literacy, the children will develop their speaking, reading and writing skills through our Global Explorers topic. Following a visit to a local farm, the children will write a recount of their experience, focusing on sequencing events, using descriptive language and sharing their own thoughts and feelings. They will then link this learning to our work on Africa, comparing the farm animals they saw locally with African animals and learning about life at our partner school in Africa. Through discussion, shared writing and independent work, children will build vocabulary, improve sentence structure and develop an understanding of similarities and differences between their own experiences and those of children in another part of the world.
In Maths, the children will continue to develop their understanding of number and apply their number skills in practical ways. They will explore money, learning to recognise coins and notes and use them to calculate the cost of items in real-life contexts. The children will then move on to measure, measuring objects using centimetres (cm) as well as non-standard units, and comparing lengths and sizes. They will also be learning about symmetry, identifying and creating symmetrical patterns and shapes through hands-on activities.
