  • Fourth week cancelled

    Wed 24 Jun 2020 Mr Vaughan

    Despite the exceptional goodwill and professionalism that has been displayed by our headteachers, teachers and support staff throughout these challenging few months, and the willingness of staff to work this fourth week, a number of factors have worked against our ability to progress with plans. These issues include:

    •    The unavailability of childcare for teachers in their home authority, given that the majority of schools in the region have confirmed that they will close for the fourth week;
    •    The inherent uncertainty of whether the two-week half-term break in the autumn will continue as we could be the only local authority in Wales with schools working the fourth week;
    •    Staff contractual obligations associated with their terms and conditions;
    •    Health and safety considerations in respect of the management arrangements in the autumn term; and
    •    Other legal constraints that potentially compromise headteachers and the Council.

    In view of these complexities, and despite ongoing positive negotiations with our trade unions, it is with regret that we announce that schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf will close on the 20th of July 2019, as originally intended. Thank you for the many supportive messages that we have received, and for supporting your learners, staff and communities during these very challenging few months.
